Background:

Founded in 2019, WIENU emerged to address the challenges faced by workers in the informal economy. With Uganda’s informal sector contributing significantly to the national economy, WIENU plays a pivotal role in ensuring these workers’ voices are heard and their rights protected.

WIENU serves as a unifying platform for workers in Informal Economy, enabling them to organize, bargain collectively, and amplify their voices in decision-making processes, social and economic interests and their working rights.

Our Mission:

To see that WIENU Members Social, economic and working rights and interests are protected, upheld, in partnership with Informal Sector Associations, trade Unions, Civil Society Organizations, and Government Agencies through collective bargaining to provide solutions to challenges affecting them.

Our Vision:

To be a network of Informal Economy Associations that provide tailor made solutions to challenges affecting workers in Informal Economy, build an inclusive society where informal workers have access to decent work, social protection, and sustainable livelihoods.

Our Goal:

To provide tailor made solutions to challenges affecting workers in the informal Economy in Uganda, while Protecting, Defending and fighting for their working rights, social and economic interests in partnership with established Informal Economy Workers’ Associations, Trade Unions, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Government Agencies through dialogues, lobby and advocacy, and different power resources approach .

WHAT WE DO

WIENU champions initiatives that uplift informal workers, including advocacy, capacity-building, and research. We focus on creating opportunities for workers to organize into unions or associations and collaborate with local authorities to address challenges in the informal economy.
